How do we define zero waste? Our criteria is simple. We ask ourselves, what happens to these products when we have used them up, they become worn or damaged, or we need to downsize our belongings? Is there a viable plan when they are no longer suitable for use?
If we can determine every bit of these products can be consumed, reused, repurposed, composted, biodegraded, or endlessly recycled and need not ever make their way to a landfill, we are confident they can be designated as zero waste. Products made with all natural fibers or ingredients may return to the earth without harmful effects by composting. Sturdier materials like stainless steel, aluminum, glass may used for generations or, if necessary, recycled again and again.
We are just as picky about packaging. A truly sustainable product will have minimal, plastic-free packaging... or none at all!
